I am really very sorry, I don’t have words to write anything, very confuse what to write about him, thats why just copied this content and paste here. After reading this post if you could suggest me anything, will appreciate and thankful to you.

Reported by Sudhir Kumar on behalf of Bhojpuria.com with special thanks to Mr. Sahil Suman and Mr. Sagar Singh (both from Ara)

On Monday, November 28 2005, I took Shramjivi Express from Patna to meet the World’s best mathematician. I reached ARA at 12:00, Mr. Sahil Suman and Mr. Sagar Singh were there to recieve me.

We took some light food and moved to the Bank of India (ARA Branch), the Manager was absent but other Bank Officails confirmed us that Dr. Vasishtha Narayan Singh is in his village only. Now, started our visit to Basantpur, a typical Bihari village, where development is yet to come.

There was no alternate to go but a BIKE, there were so many small villages in this 12 km journey, the roads are as bad as any other Village road in Bihar. One thing, which is good about this place is, Everyone knows Basantpur as “Vashishtha babu ka gaon” (The village of Dr. Basishtha Narayan). After one hour of long tedious journey, we reached his vilage.

Our first encounter was with a Villager, he said “vashisth babu” is not supposed to be treated by his family, or even this village, Vashishtha babu is a national Asset and government should take care about him. “Ab jaun ego ped howela, ookara ke hila ke jhar dehal jala, log ke bujhe ke chahi ki, agar ee ped thik rahi ta bahut fayada ho sakela (we should not waste his potential but should take special care about him, this will benefit us)” He added.

We entered his house, HE was sleeping on a KHATIYA (a kind of BED) wearing an old baniyan and a dhoti. He asked me “PEN BAWE (do you have Pen)” I gave my Pen to him. He started to write something on the Top of the Hindi newspaper, which he was reading.

We met his younger brother Aayudhya Prasad Singh, who have retired from ARMY a few months back. We started our conversation with his younger brother Ayudhya Prasad Singh, the moment we asked our first question Vashishtha babu stood up and said… “ja log, ja log, aail bada log majaa lewe… (Go, go now, you had come here for plesure…)”. This was the time, my eyes were full of tears, Not for the reason he was sending me back, but only to understand his feeling. I was able to feel that, this man had seen a lot of EMPTY Promises and is not interested for the next one.

We Left his home and went back to his neighbours. They told us, that a lot of Politicians used to visit the village, but thats an old story now. They even told us that everything depends on his mood, if he is not in the mood, no one can make him talk.

After 10 minutes, we were back to his home, now talking with his brother in Bhojpuri, within 5 minutes Bashishthjee came and asked me “Camera bawe, ego Photo la log hamaar bhai ke saath (do you have a camera, take my picture with my brother)”. It was atime of Joy, we took two photgraphs immediately. He sat of the next chair to his brother while putting his hands on his shoulders, no one can believe by that photgraph that he is mentaly disturbed.

While talking his brother told us that Shatrudhan Sinha (Former Health Minister and famous Actor) came to his house once. He even arranged a Job for his (brother’s) Son in somewhere in Health Ministry in New Delhi. Due to that employment, now they are able to get medicines at discounted rates. He says, even then, it takes Rs 1200/- per month for his medicines.

When we asked his brotyher about reasons for being mentally disturbed, He said “Aapan-aapan tareeka ba soche ke, lekin hamra ta ehe bujha ta ki adheek samman bhi ghatak howela kehu-kehu khatir. Ehija waisan mahoul naikhe, basic suvidha naikhe, bijli naikhe, bahut tarah ke dikkat ba (Everybody have their own opinions, but what I belive is, sometimes, the RECOGNISATION in the world also makes people like this. There is a lack of basic facilities like Electricity, and even the atmospheare for him to work)”.

“The Government provided him facilities for about 4 years at NIMHANS, when he was in Hospital, he seemed to be absolutely normal at that time. The Doctors and staff of NIMHNS were very co-operative, even your family members will not support you like that. BUT, we faced a lot of trouble for him at that time, so we had to take him back, after all the whole life can not be spent in a Hospital, if the Government wants, we can have facilities at Home as well. He returned at 1997 and since that time, he is here only. Although for about 2 years in 2002-2003, he went again, but to no help” He added.

When we asked him about the progress of treatment at this moment, he said “We are doing all treatment from Delhi only, my son sends all the medicines and we consult doctors on Phone regularly about condions (like sometimes, he was not able to sleep in nights, but thats resolved now). He does not want to leave this village, nobody knows, what he thinks but one thing is for sure, He is not thinking in negative all the time, sometimes he is positive as well”.

“He returned from America in 1973, he returned only due to his Love towards the nation. He is not a property of me or this village, he is for the whole world. If we die this time, nobody will care but, if a person like Vashisthjee have even FEVER, the world will be curious to know about him. The basic factors for his condition includes, the poverty, the arrangements, the electricity, his marriage, his divorce and a lot more. We do not know the actual reason, HE is the only person who knows it, but he can not tell” he said.

When we asked him about Vashisthajee’s educational background, he said “he had a research published in America, he was a TOPPER there in his time. He was an Associate Professor at University of California, when he returned. He had even worked for NASA.”

His brother feels, we should take good care of a person like HIM till the time he is alive. Although he is just 62 now. When asked about the Politicians, he said that the local MLA usually visits him. Ramvilas paswan and other Big leaders used to come, but thats an old story now. The Government also sends some aid from time to time but not regularly.

When asked about his daily actiities, he said “His day to day life is perfect even today, he reads newspaper, geeta and ramayan daily. He writes a lot as well, but nobody can understand what he is wrinting, atleast not anyone in ARA is able to understand anything till now.”

“Since YOU come from Bhojpuria samaj, its a relation of soil, please put this matter to the world so that we can help him in this condition. Although, he needs to be taken care by this world, and the whole Humanity” he requests. Then He requests HIS (vashisth jee’s) Mother to talk to us and leaves for a Marriage ceremony after giving instructions for Nasta-Pani.

When we started the conversation with her mother, the innocent lady said “His brother and family is taking care of him since past two and a half years, there is absolutely no support from government since then. The last time he was admiteed at New delhi for about 1 year and four months. HE was a lot better there during treatment. The Government wanted him to be there for long time, but we could not put him there for Life.”

“He is OK here, and I can not find any problem in him now. even if the government stopped helping us, we are taking care of all the treatment to him. WE do not have any expectations from Government. It is their duty to help him get the treatment and a better life, it depends on the government wheather they do their duty or not.” She says with hopes in her eyes.

When we asked her about reasons for his mental disbalance, she said “WE do not know any reasons, although when he returned from America, he used to take some medicines (?), when we(his mother) asked HIM (vashisthjee) about that, he said those were sleeping pills. He was even lost in 1989, in Khandarwa (Madhya Pradesh), when we were going for some treatment, after a gap of more than 4 years, in 1993 somebody recognised him in Chapra (Bihar) and informed us.”

“We demand a better atmospheare and better treatment facilities for him. We are not happy with the way his life is going on. This is a shame for this world that a talented person is sufferring like this. She added. She felt confident, when we asked her about new government in Bihar, she said, this new government will definately think something about him and will take good care of HIM.

When asked about future plans, she said “The Life will go like it is now. His brother and the family is taking care of him. Suppose, I raise my hands to you(the government) for help and if you(the government) decline to help, what would happen. We are not expecting any major changes in near future. It was the government, which stopped all the help and sent him back to this village. No government representetive comes to even meet now a days. All the politicians and Ministers visits him, but the results are only false promises.”

“The only aid we got in recent times was from Bank of India Emplyee’s Association, he presented us with Rs. 5001/- and a Shawl about 15 days ago. Yes, he reads or writes something continuously, only God knows, what he writes or reads.

  12. I think we should not expect any thing for government or wait for any action from their side. The only thing that we can do is to elect the ministers during elections and I dont think that we are not capable of that. One more thing that we can do without wasting our precious time expecting from the government like that is that we our self should take care of the national assets like Respected Dr Vashisht Narayan Singh if we are capable of. And i am not asking for we should, I am asking for we must do some thing on our own basis. Now i am a student and i am not capable of it but I swear before almighty god that when i will be a success full man i will definately do something on my basis to save my the national treasure like them who make us proud to be Indian

  13. Dr Bashist Narayan Singh is in retired state and shall be left alone to live his last phase on life in peace. As Indian and fellow Biharis we have given him enough. All we can do that we can jointly make sure that his life is comfortable during his last phase of jounery. This is very sad to note. I have a Ranchi native and I have not been to Ranchi in many years. But this word to you all that I will try my best to visit him and try to my best to take steps around the hospital, so that he gets personal attention towards his well being. I am an average person from US, else condition would be different around him at the hospital.

There is second phase to the story which constantly gets overlooked and that his wife. His wife is the one of the key contributer, apart from US agencies, being reason for his current health condition. Bashist Narayan was a scholor and his wife needed a club boy. She came from Indian Army Services background. While he was induldged in the books and literature, she planned for his destruction.

Unfortunately somewhat similar story, related to another Bihari is getting repeated. You all are taking part in this story, how and why will be explained in the second posting.

  18. On a different angle, a very similar story is being repeated again in US . An average person, who also comes from Bihar is being put through the similar cycle of operations in US. His fault, he is in path of a family filth that he is putting coverage on filthy affair of actions around a family. He has been given 10-11 grand mal seizures, involved in auto accidents, job loses and many more mental tortures. Several friends and connection have been killed in suspicious manner. Difference, Bashist babu was a great scholar and a simple person, at a point where he had limited means to fight back. So they put him on the flight and got rid off him, with claims that he was mentally not healthy. Source of this problem started with his wife, which lead to his monitoring and his love for his country. No country shall be allowed to treat a human like he was treated. We Indians within and outside of India continue to kiss ass of west which is destroying the culture. And I am positive that he is still being monitored by US agencies.
Your phone calls, what you write , what you say in private gathering and around, all are monitored and sampled, especially if you are of foreign origin in US. As I write, all of this positing is been monitored and this monitoring is not limited to US only, in a extended fashion, it is also present in India, but in a limited way by US agencies. Bashist babu’s wife wanted him out of her way, and she worked with local authorities to get it done, with all kind of garbage loaded up on him. And exactly the same case is being repeated. But the response this time around is slightly different, now this time around entire world id taking part, one way or the other, with aid of telecommunication companies (corrupt AT&T executives and Cisco, etc).

We all know that there support for Bashisht ji , but this support shall generate funds for his well being now to make sure his last part of journey is well taken care off. I would love to his talent and brain at work, but he has been purposefully cut off from the research. Although it would not be bad idea to get him healthy, excited and invite him to speak at ISRO (Indian Space Research Organization). Reading his statements from 2005 posting, he is heart broken and tired of repeating the same details of his ordeals to everyone. We as 2plus billion Indians have failed to stand up to a corrupt system in US, where other Indians have also taken part to put him, in his current conditions.

An organization or fund raising shall be done, with aid of local and central government. This is only possible by younger generation, so respect this soul and help his family in his last part of journey. Nitish Kumar, Lalu Yadav, Raghubansh Singh, Nikhil Kumar are few of the politician that can provide assistance to a organized movement. Someone needs to take an initiative, not just talk and this comes from younger Biharis and Indians, I commit thousand dollars as a seed money, if there is a just path. I will also create movement around Ara to get him assistance.

He was teaching at Berkley, one of the top institution in world, for no simple reason. Some of his work was associated with NASA, and his love for his country came in his way. He could not forget his family, friends and origin was his crime. We shall work to raise the awareness so that this kind of crap is not repeated again. We Must Not Tolerate such actions, Indians and people of Indian origin make up 3/4th of the world and if united for a just and right reason, we shall be able to overturn any decision, even a decision from God himself. Just trust in the soul, strength and drive for justice. So let us get united younger India, for the right cause, not for the fantasy coverage created around to put coverage on any other filthy cause, which in-turn is providing coverage for further more filth in society. As I write I am being given signals through pain in my stomach and noise in ears , which is simple norm of my life now in US. Do not get intimidated by any force, time is to get united and fight for right reasons.

  19. A country that do not care for is genius people do not seem to go progressive way. If our govt. is deaf (no doubt to say that) we should respect him and raise some funds for his help. May be some NGO should come ahead and arrange contributions from willing people to reach him.
When rulers go deaf the public should raise their morals for a better society.

    Comment by Jagdish — June 26, 2012 @ 12:49 pm | Reply

    • I partially do not agree with you. We should not look towards the government for all the matters. I may agree with you, our management may deaf and dumb. But it is our tendency that anytime if we want to do something for society or humanity, we are always giving this responsibility to government or some NGOs.
The fact is that this is our country and society and we are responsible for our country and society (Including our government). If we want something good, we have to start is from self. If you want to do something for him, let start, Me and other readers (his supporters) will support you.

  20. dear friends , i read about him somewhere in 1986 ,during my posting at air base in jodhpur,in saptahik hindustan, a weekly magazine. [every information is according to the magazine ,which read with the headlines,,WORLD TOPMOST SCIENTIST,MATHEMATICIAN, ON THE ROADS,INSANE AND HELPLESS.]He was a topper, goldmedallist in USA. He was offered a nice job with better pay and perks,[green card] with all goodliving fascilities.he refused and came back to India, he was not given a suitable position and he was not given any help for his research projects,.after some time his wife also left him .he broke down ,bhatar mata ki sewa karne ka khyal ek pagalpan saabit hua.and went on pills, no one supporting him,he was seen moving and sleeping on roads by people.later on ,i read about him in a news paper,,dainik jaagran,at Ballabhgarh hospital, somewhere in 2004,apx. Which read narayan singh found at roads in lunatic condition ,helped by govt. Politicians to get admitted in hospital,,ha ha ,,what a joke,, because it was election time,,and that was not going to last longer. Today ,july 2012 , i got idea to read about him,,because one of my friends ,a doc in USA…has same problem, desh ki seva ka khyaal,to serve needy and poor and work for nation.. But i am not going to demoralise him by telling vashishtha narain singh story. Let there be many, many, narainsinghs. Descesions taken by heart are ,mostly heart breaking,,lekin dil hai ki maanta nahi…its DIL DAA MAMLA HAI. Or if I heed to my heart,i may lose my head,,,and if i heed to my head,,my heart will bleed,, ,,so friends, long live narain singh spirit,,bharat mata ke saput ko salaam, pranaam,,JAI HIND

  22. I’ve three comments to make :
    1) It was foolish of Vashishth Narayan Singh to have come back to India from USA.
    2) No man, howsoever great, can shun his destiny.
    3) Mr Sudhir Kumar needs to improve his English

    • Mr. Upadhyay,
Thank you for your comment, but somehow I am not agree with you. Following are the clarifications:

      1. Vashishth Babu was not foolish, but yes he was a genius man (I must say “He is”). His health issues and physical situation were not allowing him to be there.
      2. You are right that no one can shun (I am sure you meant it as avoid, ignore or reject) his destiny. And he already achieved that, his invention is one of the greatest as E=MC*MC was not a small mystery. And It is the reason we are writing about him 🙂
      3. It is my request to you, please do not comment on anyone. It is always better to improve our personal skills, apart of looking others.

  33. When i was a child i read about him. He had scored 300 out of 100 in maths exam at patna college becoz he solved every question in three different ways. His answer sheet is still kept as an exhibit there. He is a bharat ratna material. Him being mentally ill can be due to his wife ditching him. I have seen that many great brainy people catch mental illness due to some shock in life.
